This has been my favorite original painting. I got it at Orycon 1996. The art show there has a policy of selling art with two listed prices: the 'minimum bid' which is the lowest price the Artist will take, and the 'direct sale price'. If no one has bid in it yet, it can be had for direct sale price. If it gets 3 bids on it, it goes to auction at the end of the convention, and the final price could go even higher than the direct sale, depending on the demand for it, but still it is rare buyers ever go for the direct sale. April was only asking $185 'direct sale'. I was so taken by it that I wrote $195 on it. This is unheard of. I felt guilty spending $400 reframing it, so I sent her another $100 to help out with the next art show, but she was not fortunate to sell any other paintings. She has even taken down her web site from lack of interest. |
This is our first original painting by Matt Harpold at Orycon 2001. It was his first art showing. When I saw it in the art show, I passed it by, not even looking at the price, since original art is always several hundreds of dollars, if not thousands. I was amazed to later find it at the art auction, where 3 people had bid on it, bringing the price to wopping $70. I was even more amazed to see the auction stall at $90 cold hard cash <LOL>. I began to bid for it and it only went up to $150 before the others gave up. I made the copper frame for it and it is displayed under special halogen lighting over our fireplace mantle in the living room. We have gotten many compliments for the framing as well as the painting. It has definitely grown on us, and we are very glad I grabbed it when I had the chance. I still think this is one of his best works to date. |

Here is a second Matt Harpold original painting we bought. We got it on April 20th 2003, at the art auction for Norwescon 26 in Seattle. Matt is making his mark in the art market and has now been published on a few novel covers. His web site is. |
We met this artist at Saturday Market of all places in the Summer of 2002. He had been there 2 weekends and was complaining about not selling much. I saw that he had a terrible marketing sense. He only had his original art there for sale, and none of it was framed. It was just poorly matted. He had no prices posted, and when I asked him how much he wanted for this piece, he told me to make an offer. That is not good salesmanship, as it places the Buyer in a difficult spot. The Buyer may offer too much and get burned, or offer too little and risk insulting the Artist. I offered him $100 for it, and he was quick to agree with no haggling. I dropped it off at my favorite frame shop here, called Collection Connection on Capital Hwy. The new matting and frame cost us $125. It was not until a week later that Tia discovered at Borders that it was the Norah Jones album cover that he had made the art piece from. |

I have several prints by Patricia Davis seen on page 4. She has been focusing on doing galaxy paintings (as seen above her head) since then.

Here is a special painted turkey feather by Theresa Mather we got at Orycon. She has a web site with a very cute name: http://RockFeatherScissors.com/ to display her art. This is the first of her works we were that drawn to. She normally paints wildlife on these feathers. Wildlife is fine and she is as good as they come, but to invest in an original art piece one needs to have a passion for that work. You have probably noticed a common thread in the art works we are drawn to. |

This is a great expression of the classic Yin & Yang symbol we are all familiar with. I love the use of these classic Asian characters in this classic Asian symbol. I am surprised someone had not thought of this sooner. She was the Artist Guest of Honor at Rustycon in January 2002. Funny that this design still lives in obscurity, since it was not done by a more famous artist. |

I got this at a charity art auction at Orycon. I do not know anything about the artist. | I am afraid I did not learn anything about this Artist. |
These artworks are by artist Lee Seed in Texas:
Autumn's Muse pencil & ink on illustration board size: 14" x 17" |
Blue pencil & ink on illustration board size: 9" x 11" |
For designing a web site for this artist, I was offered any original framed artwork as my commission. This is the one I picked. I was pleased to find that it was larger than the prints she sold. She has since taken over web design of her site. I am very happy for her. |
I first bought a print (#10 of 50). I later saw the original was up for sale on E-Bay, and I just had to have it. |
